Reverse osmosis water filters are one of the most successful methods for ensuring that drinking water is as pure as possible. Also known as hyper-filtration, the RO filter can remove as much as 99|of contaminants in water and is the purification technology used by most leading water bottlers. The process has three steps: The water passes through a pre-filter to remove sediment such as sand and silt. The reverse osmosis filter, which is usually in a spiral shape. There are two kinds of RO membranes: cellulose tri-acetate (CTA) which is chlorine-tolerant and thin film composite/material (TFC/TFM) which is not. The post-filter which is generally carbon in grains or block forms. This filter is used to remove any remaining odors and tastes from the water. Reverse osmosis water filters work by passing the water through a semi-permeable membrane. In normal osmosis, water passes from the membrane to the more concentrated solution on the other side to dilute it. In the reverse osmosis process, pressure is applied to the water on the more concentrated side, forcing it through the membrane and removing dissolved solids. The liquid that does not pass through the membrane then moves downstream, taking the particles with it and ensuring that the membrane stays clean. In addition to removing impurities, the RO system is also effective in removing radioactive particles such as strontium and plutonium from the water, which makes it a good choice for households living near nuclear power plants. RO filtration is so effective that factories and other industrial plants use this process to clean the waste water that they produce. Reverse osmosis can also be used to turn seawater as well as collected rainwater into acceptable drinking water. And it is energy-efficient since RO does not need thermal energy but uses a high pressure pump to produce water flow. However, reverse osmosis water filters have a number of disadvantages. One of them is that the process produces less water than other filtration methods and is also slower; an RO system may take as long as four hours to produce one gallon of clean drinking water. Because of this, home systems will need a storage barrel to hold the drinking water produced rather than being able to access it directly through the taps. Another is that there are high rates of water spoilage with the process; for each unit of treated water, there may be as much as eight units of waste water produced. Some critics have pointed out that the RO process may also remove some helpful minerals from the water. In addition, RO filtration produces water that is acidic, which may cause eye, skin and mucous membrane irritation in some people. However, if you are looking for healthy drinking water for your family, a water delivery service that purifies water using an RO system is a good choice. Apart from getting water that is cleaner and freer of impurities than water purified by other filtration and purification systems, it is also more affordable since it costs less to purify water using reverse osmosis water filters.
